In regards to direct to home feature films, there was a plan for this but the theater eco-system revolted. The price was unreasonable and it was bound to fail anyways, but the resistance to change (and evolution) is out of control. I think one thing that Silicon Valley does well is fail, and a result success is great when it does come around.

I watched this episode and didn’t expect an IPTV discussion but this was great. I’ve been tracking the industry for quite sometime and I think there was a good diverse perspective, from a TIVO user to a Comcast lover (super rare). Been using a beta of Ubi (myubi.tv) we’;ll see if they stack up to the next level experience in streaming video frameworks

Waze is
cool!

Waze would
even be better if someone makes a heads up display projector carkit for the
iPhone. You projected the image of your iPhone on the windshield and the Iphone
hangs in the middle of your car. Then you use start WAZE and move your hand in
front of the Iphone so you can give voice commands. You don’t have to take your
eyes of the road anymore and still have all the functionality of the app.

I think a good idea for a Kickstarter project!

It can also lead to a whole new generation of hands free in
car apps. Save driving while
use your favorite aps. I can imagine someone playing angry birds by moving his hand
in front of the camera and seeing the game on his heads up display projector carkit.
This is probably not the best example but it’s better than having your Iphone
in your hand while playing angry birds. A better one would be a music or email
app. Last one of the day, the in car flipboard app. Flipping the pages by
saying next or waving your hand. Every app you use in the morning you can build
a hands free version of.

Eric, I consulted in SV for a couple of years and got to like the process of giving away a few hours or a day to understand what I called the the miss-alignment of official vision, mission, strategies, goals, plans, objectives, and the tactics on the ground. What was actually being developed, tested, sold?
This approach had the good effect of showing up the elephant in the room, and often killed the dreams, and sometimes, allowed the frankness needed to pivot.
Your concluding remarks – how do we improve the outcome in a way that addresses the next economy – is something I would enjoy talking about – I will look for your blog – but I think there is another dimension that needs formalizing – the roles you and I play when we consult are as untamed as the start ups we are trying to help. I wrote a manual to help standardize the process my consultants used for uncovering the miss-alignment (mentioned above) as a means for consultants to be able to discuss their findings in some context that had metrics – as subjective as there were even using the guidance in the manual.

None-the-less, the usefulness was evident, and I hope you think worth some discussion.

Second, now back into a start up of my own, which would have benefited from your insights, the reality is that it has proven impossible for me to apply my own tests and follow my own advice. This too takes some discussion, but out of that discussion I think there comes another logic for funding.

Please let me know if you are interested in exploring any of this further. I am in the San Diego area but will be in SV in the coming weeks, dates uncertain.

Fantastic interviews, but one thing I’m always confused about…Sherman claims he was making 600k a year I thought with Lycos. With no kids, why do you have to fund a low capital intensive startup (not quite tech but you don’t need a factory) on credit cards? I am always amazed at the “funded on credit card” story with entrepreneurs, but doesn’t quite seem to fit here. apologies for the random rant but I’m curious.

Fantastic show! For 2012 I’d add an increasing probability that social media companies and marketers will discover the sixty-five million plus US “boomers and their parents” market. There are currently many organically growing networks serving that very heterogeneous demographic, finding ways to use both social media and gaming apps. 2012 may be a year of consolidation and growth.

Again, awesome work you guys are doing. Had two things come to mind while watching this episode.

At 11:15 when Tony is talking about putting together a training program for the twiweb audience if they get enough requests, call it GroopFu, the name Jose mentions right afterward during the godaddy ad.

Also, it would be cool if time codes in the episode descriptions were links to that point in the youtube video, on this page for example: http://thisweekin.com/thisweekin-startups/kevin-rose-of-milk-on-this-week-in-startups-218/. So people can click on that question or time code and go directly to that point in the video.

Another thing just came to mind, I think a few episode back, one of the things mentioned from the profile reviews was to promote video clips. what do you think about instead of image thumbnails, have a small clip that you can play right there in the thumbnail space, then click on it again to go to that episode, or time code in that episode from the clip they watched.

Don’t know how feasible those suggestions are, just some thoughts I had while navigating the site and watching the show.

Seems like a very intriguing idea; however, is it even technologically viable?

It seems that in order for a custom splash/login page to work, one has to write firmware compatible with each type of router.

There is one company in the US that does this– http://www.hotspotsystem.com/en/hotspot/free_hotspot.html

However, it seems that they jump through a lot of hoops and have a complex installation process specific to each router type (e.g. Cisco, Belkin, D-Link):

Having a complex installation process would be a barrier to making this technology ubiquitous.

Dope interview! I finally got to find out what some of his tricks are. Fabians mixes on the last Clipse lp are incredible. Particularly “Kinda Like a Big Deal”, nothing but aggressive groove!

I think you need to put into your Agile steps, before beginning work to have a GLOSSARY page. We found that our developers and programmers were using different words for the same thing, or at times, not understanding each other because they were using words for certain elements that were not defined well enough for another to follow. We had to stop and create a wiki glossary page. This happened to you too!

I liked the back and forth and differing of opinion, but I didn’t like the comparison between Tim Ferriss’ method of titling his book (A/B Testing through Adwords) and the Sideways author’s books. Ferriss writes business and self-help books for a certain audience, but a novel is a totally different ballpark. I agree with Rex Pickett that while you can’t write in a vacuum, you shouldn’t compare fiction to how one should go about writing a book like Four Hour Work Week.

Beeing a bassman I learned a lot by watching my all-time favourite bassplayer, Wyzzard Jerry Seay. Comming from Germany first time I saw Wyzzard on a show called “Rockpalast” on March 4th 1978 – beeing 16 at this moment – and found myself suported by staying with bass guitar. All my friends played guitar, but I loved the sound of this big, fat strings from playing the grand piano whe I was 8 jears old. So in the age of 14 I bought my first bass.

I agree totally with Wyzzard by the subject of the role of the bass in a band context. We (the bassplayers) have to support the band, beeing a slave to the rhytm. Playing fancy stuff like triplets and lots of slapping is dangerous, because in some situation it will kill the rhytm. So I am “famous” because I do the rrots stuff, staying in time sharp as a barbours knife while playing with a drummer. Another thing is conversation with the drummer. Keep an eye on him, watch him play and make him watch you, so everything stays in time.

Jerry brought his Precision Bass to the studio. If you appear with a Precision in a recording studio, you will be loved by the engineer, because this bass brings you the kind of sound that cuts through the band in any recording situation. Don’t bring your fancy high-end hi-fi luthier’s bass to recording, as it is not easy to make them cut through. Think of Eddie Jackson of Queensryche, he can’t be heard wit his Spectors, but cuts through with his Mike Lull Basses, which are build like Fenders. Also be aware of your EQ-settings. The “smiley face”- setting may sound good when playing alone, but you have to use mids if you want to get heard. BTW the “Ampeg-tone” is made by low mids, not with a smiley-face – setting. Smiley-face also will cost you a lot of power, because amplifiers need this sheer ammount of power to produce a ton of low end.

I think you all are doing an awesome job with the shows and network. Hats off to you guys and Jason for doing this. I’m hooked.

I do have a suggestion for the website, something that I personally would find useful. I think you guys should add an “Original Air Date” / “Recorded on: DATE” or “Added on: DATE” on the info pane to all the episodes on the network so that people coming in for the first time have some sort of reference as to when all this content was created. So it would read something like:
Episode 121Recorded on Mar 1, 2011The way I started watching these shows, mainly TWiWeb and TWiST, was that I just typed in “Web Design” on youtube, and the Web show was the first result. Had to do a little searching to find what all was going on with this series and wanted to start from the beginning. I’m glad to say that I watched all of the web design shows and started watching all of the startup shows as well, from numero uno! But some of the stuff Jason talks about goes a little way back and would be nice to see when that was. I know youtube has the date in the Uploaded by field, but it’s easier to navigate and watch them through the Thisweekin.com site.

That being said, I like the idea. I’ve never thought of video content as “lean back/forward” before (might be behind on this) but if you get me to feel that way on Shelby.tv, then I’m game. I love the idea of basing the content you watch around communities – or at least, people with similar interests. But not all of my friends are people I would “follow” or take advice on what to watch. Some of them (possibly most), in my opinion, have horrid taste. I’m concerned as to how you’ll solve the “Friends with bad taste” problem. It could potentially cluster your stream of content with unwanted junk… but if Shelby is smart and learns what I like, that’s different. I’m still unclear as to how your site will generate/provide content that I want to watch. Do I have to spend time at first and actively search so it learns “me”? I don’t have a problem with that. Does it take cues from my friends? Ehhhhhhhhhh… it better figure out which ones… Does it source from certain communities I follow? I like that… Maybe there should be the creation of “credible communities,” people of stature within whatever media genre – news, comedy, technology, dram – people that I trust to have good taste. These might not necessarily be my friends… think about that. Like an asymmetric following like Twitter… or a Pandora – Suster, Doerr and Breyer have their own channel of relevant content… Depp, Downey, Jr. and Streep have theirs… Sometimes I follow/trust people because of their clout. What if you had some clout scale – a rating, gauge, score – for individuals based on the type/relevance of content they share… Admittedly, this is a rant. Whatever. Hope it makes sense.

Jesus, Reece. Stop trying to defend what you did the night before. At the very beginning of this interview, I wasn’t exactly sure what Shelby.tv did, how it was different from Hulu or Youtube. After listening through the entirety of the interview and seeing you two come to the conclusion that Shelby is that “lean-back” experience for short-form video, I got it… but that’s my point – I had to listen to the entire interview. And that was Mark’s point, too. You didn’t stress or severely underscore your differentiation. I loved Mark’s statement about hyperbole Reece’s two sentence pitch – the first is great and all (or “in the clouds”) but that second better have real substance. ”We’ve heard all the hyperbole before – that doesn’t matter. Saying what you do and why it stands out matters.”
Simple.

For what it is worth . . . I agree with what Mark was trying to drive home at the end (and throughout) the show. Indeed, crafting compelling value messaging that gets the recipient, reader, visitor, investor, acquirer to act is made more challenging when attempting to target multiple segments with the same message. Key is to better understand and define which segments will associate value with what you are offering, what their wants and / or needs are. Remember, it is possible to craft messaging that causes wants to be perceived as needs.

From Etsy’s Terms of Service: “You may not use Etsy to direct shoppers to another online selling venue to purchase the same items as listed in your Etsy shop, as this may constitute fee avoidance. This includes posting links/URLs or providing information sufficient to locate the other online venue(s).”

Also, for the likelihood that these community marketplaces will actually produce enough completed transactions that Smarketplaces will be economically viable, browse either Etsy or Ebay and notice how many listings DO NOT SELL.

Not to mention that all of the private betas I looked at seemed to be touting the lack of fees as a reason to use their marketplaces….

I think Ryan and Sonia both need to work on their presentation of self, but Ryan more than Sonia. She is fairly poised and at least she’s an engineer. Ryan, however, seems too much like a corporate drone crossed with a used-car salesman.

And I hate the name.

I haven’t finished listening to this show yet, but I already hate the guests. Both of them speak with a ‘high school accent’ (that’s the best way I can describe it) that you’d expect to find in a Disney movie about spoiled kids, not in an episode of TWIVC.

Also, why do new-grads think they can add value at a company like McKinsey? They need to go and do real work somewhere first. If McKinsey fronted these two with me, McKinsey would be shown the door.

If my opinion changes by the end of the show, I’ll post back and revise my view. I’m not intending to troll here, just making observations.

The show was good but the new setting was poor. Glare from the windows and horrible, horrible audio quality. Not saying it can’t work in that kind of setting, just saying it’s a bad experience so far… keep working it.

Great show and fantastic guests as always!

As for the new studio setting, it’s very distracting. Too many microphones on the table, too much echo. The worst part, of course are camera angles that keep switching back and forth.

Any chance to be able to go back to the old studio and format?

So the Shark Tanks are pretty good to see. Will we see a “Shark Tank Survivor” episode where you revisit the companies that did pitches and see where they are now. Did they follow the advice, what is their current pitch, how much they are making now, did they get any investors, etc.

Damn that song on the ITL is really awful… who listens to that crap? Thank god for real musicians
