The Annie Duke Show #5 with Suzanne Todd, Ed Crasnick & Leslie Hatfield

The elections are here, Frankenfish on the attack, and our panel has plenty to say about it! This week, Annie was joined by producer Suzanne Todd (Memento, Alice in Wonderland, Austin Powers); comedian/actor/writer and This Week in Comedy host Ed Crasnick; Huffington Post contributor and editor at GRACE Leslie Hatfield, and of course Brian in the corner!

First up, Suzanne Todd, the mastermind producer behind some of our favorite films (and probably yours, too) talked to us about her experience on set, what it’s like collaborating with Mike Myers, rooting for the underdog and being a woman in a male-dominated industry. She had great advice to share with our viewers who might aspire to be in the film business, and also gave us some insight into how she chooses between all the great projects…and knows when to pass quickly.

Suzanne stuck around for our panel discussion: Frankenfood, should we be scared? The focus, genetically modified food and our thoughts on eating it, growing it, and making movies about it. Brian framed the discussion with some Fast Facts including:

1. Opinions of genetically modified–or GM–foods are all across the board.

2. In 2008, the Royal Society of Medicine published a report essentially saying we’ve been eating GM foods for 15 years with no ill effects.

3. Some environmental agencies however note that food allergies over the past 15 years have been on the rise, which may be directly related to GM foods.

4. Also, the effects of GM foods on the environment in general–especially on organisms that feed and interact with GM crops–cannot be measured yet.
5. Bottomline: seems like we need more time to get a handle on if GM foods are safe, and what long-term effects, if any, there may be from them.

Our panelists weighed in on genetically modified ‘frankenfish’, which is currently being reviewed by the FDA. Considering the processing most of our foods go through Annie asked, ‘do we even care?’ Share your thoughts on GM food below!

With the election on November 2nd, we of course had to discuss voting. Who are you siding with? The d—- or the t—-? Are you voting? Will we all be waiting in line at dispensaries next week having this conversation?

Let us know how you’re feeling about the elections, genetically modified foods, and the future of film in the comments below!

I’m no feminist… however, it is encouraging to have Annie expose the women who are kicking ass in our world.

    Thanks!
