While Prop 19 went up in smoke last Tuesday, polls show most Californians still think prohibition’s a bad idea. Is it only a matter of time before marijuana becomes legal in California? We’ll cover that topic, plus is the zombie series The Walking Dead a sign of the apocalypse for the vampire craze?

Before we get into our panel debate, Annie interviewed Ben Paul, President and CEO After-School All-Stars. After-School All-Stars provides after school enrichment, homework help, and tutoring services. The children in the program participate voluntarily and help shape the content. Annie and Ben talk about the education system, the lack of funding, and how parents and children can get involved with the organization to change the future of education. Brian Doherty Senior Editor, Reason magazine and Reason.com, and Stephen Gutwillig, the California State Director of Drug Policy Alliance were our panelists, weighing in on our discussion topic, Prop 19- which didn’t pass in the recent election. A clear majority also believe that pot prohibition does more harm than good. Brian framed the discussion for us with some not-so Fast Facts:

A. Prop 19 would have legalized pot in CA and allow local government to tax it.
B. Proponents claim that Prop 19 would generate $1.4 billion in tax revenue a year
C. Prohibition keeps price of pot high, thus making it enticing for gangs to get involved.
D. If legalized, pot may cost as little as $40 an ounce rather than $300 an ounce and more.
E. Opponents argue Prop 19 was poorly drafted and create chaotic mess for local governments.
F. It would still be a felony to grow or sell pot under Federal law
G. Long term public costs associated with substance abuse could vastly exceed tax revenue benefit
H. Despite rejecting Prop 19, Californians favor legalization.
