News Headlines
Red Hat’s solution set enables interoperability and portability, recognizing that customers have IT architectures composed of many different hardware and software components from various vendors. Cloud Foundations is offering capabilities that allow customers to use multiple clouds effectively.
Gary Chen, research manager, Enterprise Virtualization Software at IDC says: “In our extensive research, we’ve found that open APIs and interoperability are essential to customers considering the cloud. Our research shows that 80 percent of enterprises cite the lack of interoperability standards as a challenge in adopting cloud computing services. With Cloud Foundations, Red Hat is on the right track with cloud by accelerating interoperability and portability to prevent cloud lock in.”
Q: We have this news, cloud.com integrating w VMWare, Eucalyptus making more waves…what do you make of it?
They’ve created a scorecard for rating and ranking cloud readiness, but more importantly, they’ve announced a team of cloud advisors to drive future innovations at HP. Among them: Nigel Cook (DMTF Cloud Mgt Working Group); Jamie Erbes (CTO SW & Solutions); Archie Reed (security component of HP cloud initiatives); Lee Kedrie (branding, evangelist HP Tech Consulting); Paul Perez (storage expert) and Mark Shoemaker (20 yr industry vet – cloud services).
Amazon doesn’t break out its cloud results, but by piecing together numbers from various stories, UBS Investment Research estimates the (AWS) cloud and all its parts will be worth $500 million this year. That’s roughly 2% of Amazon’s revenues. The number is expected to jump to $750 million next year and could even reach $2.54b by 2014.
Cloud computing isn’t just a way to try to save money on IT infrastructure; it’s a way to accelerate business agility and innovation.
Q: Seems that the flexibility and quick deployment aspect of cloud computing has some additional ROI around innovation and speed-to-market. Do most enterprises considering cloud understand this?
Those who sell virtualization, security, storage, and almost all servers position their products in the cloud. Yet I suspect that a lot of the hardware and software products included in these numbers are actually being leveraged for more traditional solutions.
Q: While we’ve been discussing the issues around pushing all technologies to the cloud computing label, should we take the analyst numbers with a grain of salt?

Key discussion points:
• What are the top priorities for life sciences co’s looking to invest in cloud computing? What are they trying to accomplish?
- What are some of the unique hurdles life sciences co’s face as they consider the cloud?
- What are the most frequently asked questions you get from clients?
- Where do you see the cloud really benefiting life science technology?
- On premise cost vs. On Demand Cost.
- We have heard that the On Demand may have a security issue and our CFO does not want our Intellectual property on the Internet.
- Medical Device (significant part of Life Science Community) raises the issue of how they can access the Cloud Systems to ensure their GXP Processes are being maintained, documented and validated to ensure in the case of an FDA audit they can validate the system. Are your technical people trained on GXP Processes?
- Pharmacuetical Companies ( the other significant part of Life Sciences) is the Vigilence/Transparency into the system for validating the systems for compliance as it relates to 21CFR part 11 Compliance.
- Clinical Software and Remote data Capture in a Cloud Environment.
- Is the system validated? What is the advantage to remote vs. On Premise?
