1)  Dell has launched the next phase of its Virtual Integrated System Architecture, offering Virtualization to Cloud management tools

The key words here are converged and open. Dell promises customers will be able to preserve and leverage existing data center infrastructure without silos or rip and replace.

Dell’s Advanced Infrastructure Manager (AIM – not to be confused with AOL Instant Messenger) is designed to simplify data center management with wizards, plugins, etc. The VIS Self-Service Creator uses a Web-based portal for end users to launch their own workloads.

Q:   How important is the design philosophy of open architecture with its promise of choice, flexibility and agility? Is this a long-term play on Dell’s part?

2) TwinStrata has launched a new cloud storage appliance optimized for data protection.

Called CloudArray ‘software as an appliance,’ it integrates with applications, and physical and virtual servers. And in the event of a disruption or outage, data can be restored on-site, off-site, or in the cloud.

Q:  Right now, the cloud is mainly being used by SMBs to backup or archive data, but the next step is to use the cloud for primary storage. When do you think this will happen?

3) ACQUISITION: CA is buying Hyperformix, a specialist in building capacity management software, in a move to to better manage virtualized environments.
The move also broadens CA’s announced direction of providing the tools to build and manage internal cloud environments.

Q:  Talk about why capacity management is a tough goal to achieve in virtualized environments. What benefits will CA customers see from Hyperformix?

4)  Amazon Web Services has released a PHP development kit.
The AWS SDK for PHP works with PHP 5.2 or later versions. It’s based on the CloudFusion toolkit and includes a library of APIs, code samples and documentation. Previously, developers had to download several libraries from different providers in order to build an application on multiple AWS products.

5) Wall Street not bullish on cloud computing
Computerworld – Wall street firms have been slow to take full advantage of the potential financial and resource savings available through cloud computing because they have security and regulatory concerns, say IT executives.
