**NEWS HEADLINES**
1) Microsoft is suing SalesForce for 9 counts of patent infringement, claiming the CRM software central to SalesForce was actually Microsoft’s invention. SalesForce directly competes with Microsoft’s Dynamics programs in the CRM market.
2) At its I/O conference today, Google unveiled it’s teaming up with VMWare on its Google App Engine for Business. The companies said they plan to do research on ‘multiple fronts’ and that the project will support systems that ‘aren’t proprietary.’
3) At the CA World conference in Las Vegas last week, Dr. Ajei Gopal, exec VP of products & technology said: “[IT will be about] managing a highly virtualized, highly adaptable, internal and external supply chain where the focus is on the product. In this new era, the entire Internet is going to be the data center.“
4) CA also announced ‘Cloud Commons,’ an online resource where IT professionals can obtain info & resources on enterprise cloud computing. David Hodgson, senior vice president of the Cloud Products & Solutions business line at CA Technologies said, “Today, there is no comprehensive, unbiased source that solicits and aggregates the most current and relevant knowledge about cloud computing and the accumulated, actual experiences that organizations are having with the cloud.”
5) At the Sapphire Conference in Orlando, SAP announced a keystone of its private cloud strategy. The company is now running its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software on the Vblock system backed by Cisco, EMC and VMWare. SAP tested the new setup with Levi Strauss and showed it could lead to cost savings. Significance: Levi’s implementation of SAP back in 2003 led to serious issues, including a big hit to their second quarter earnings in 2008.
6) In a move to differentiate itself from the competition in the ever-growing Infrastructure-as-a-Service market, Amazon has announced another service offering cheaper storage with a lower service level. Called Reduced Redundancy Storage, or RRS, it’s a less reliable tier of Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3).
