This Week in iPad #10 with Scott Suhy

Thursdays at 4pm PDT

Featuring Scott Suhy, CEO of Pointabout (makers of appmakr).  Jacob Burch and Lon Harris host This Week in iPad Thursdays at 4pm PT.

Show Notes

Host Lon Harris commented on the iPad meet-ups which occurred on  Tuesday and Wednesday and thanked Zach Taylor for his participation in the show. Harris also mentioned that This Week in Android will now be This Week and Mobile and that This Week in Comedy will be coming soon. Harris mentioned that there will also be a ThisWeekIn application available for the iPad which was previewed on episode 9.

News

iPad Email Leak – The first story discussed was the AT&T hack which resulted in the leak of email addresses and the ICC-ID’s for 114,000 iPad 3G users. Burch referred to the event as “a case of accidents happens” and believed that there would be no significant ramifications for Apple. Harris noted that AT&T has fixed the issue.

Pulse News Reader - The hosts discussed the New York Times’ takedown request for the Pulse News Reader claiming that Pulse made commercial use of the company’s RSS feeds which was against their terms of service. Apple removed the application on Tuesday and brought the application back up on Wednesday. Harris said that it was “Spooky” that a company could decide they don’t like an application and get it removed from the app store.

Burch and Harris agreed that the Pulse-case was an example of the unfriendliness that Apple has towards iOS developers. Scott Suhy commented that there are a lot of rules placed on developers, but that Apple has improved significantly during the last year. Suhy says that his company has a great relationship with Apple, but there have been a few surprises from Apple along the way.

Freedom From Porn – A group called “Freedom From Porn” has been placing parody advertisements for Apple around the city of San Francisco as a response to Steve Jobs’ statement that the iPad offers users “freedom from porn.” The hosts said that the lack of porn on the iPad is a non-issue for most issues.

The Paperback Kindle - Marketing extraordinaire Seth Godin said that Amazon should try to compete with Apple by creating a bare-bones $50.00 e-reader to compete with the iPad. Godin referred to the hypothetical device as a “paperback kindle.” Harris and Burch said that they would not buy a $50.00 Kindle because they already have an iPad. Burch said that the $259.00 price point is too high for Amazon to compete with the iPad. Harris said that Amazon should create the “iPod Shuffle of e-readers.”

Interview

Scott Suhy shared that his company saw opportunity when application stores moved from cell-phone carriers to the device makers. Suhy said that his company received a lot of requests for applications to be made for the iPhone. Suhy said that his company decided to produce AppMakr, which allows users with small budgets to create simple iPad applications.

Harris asked whether or not apps are the new blogs and if every website would have an associated app. Suhy said that ultimately the cross-platform nature of the browser will have the most success during the long term, but there’s strong demand for apps in the short term. Suhy said that Android, Blackberry and Nokia’s open-door policy to apps will lower the barriers of entry for everyone to have an application and that his company’s job is to help push that cost toward zero.

Suhy created a ThisWeekIn application using AppMakr as a demo. Suhy walked through the application creation process using AppMakr. Suhy also mentioned AppMakr’s quality score and how AppMakr can provide suggestions to help you improve your apps. Suhy provided some suggestions to developers to help promote their apps and said that AppMakr would focus on helping companies promote their apps in July. He added that the market is probably not ready for a version of AppMakr is ready for the iPad.

Planet of the Apps

Harris and Burch reviewed VNC, computer control and remote desktop applications this week.

iTeleport – Harris reviewed iTeleport, which detects computers on the local network and shows screens of networked computers. Harris noted that the app had support for dual monitors, which some other applications did not have. Harris said that the application provides “great value” at $24.99.

Touch Pad Pro – Burch reviewed “Touch Pad Pro” which turns your iPad into a giant track-pad, which is available for $0.99

Log Me In Ignition – Harris reviewed “Log Me In Ignition” which is available for $29.99, which requires users to install a client on their desktop to make a connection. Harris was not successful in using “Log Me In Ignition” to connect to a remote desktop on the show. Harris said that the major downside of the application was its lack of support for dual monitors.

Air Mouse – Burch reviewed “Air Mouse” which works similar to “Touch Pad Pro”, but also imports the user’s dock from their computer (if running OSX). Air Mouse also imports user controls from certain applications such as iTunes and Safari.

Next week, RSS readers will be reviewed on This Week in iPad’s “Planet of the Apps” segment. At reply Jacob Burch and Lon Harris with your suggestions.
