News
iPad Will Get iOS 4.2 in November
The biggest iPad news was really that the iOS 4.2 update will arrive in November and bring all the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch functionality to the iPad. This includes, of course, “folder” organization, multitasking and video/audio streaming from iTunes, Game Center and to the new Apple TV via AirPlay. (Game Center: Basically Xbox Live for your iPhone. Platform for tracking achievements, discovering new games, multiplayer matches.) Launches for iPhone and iPod Touch next week but iPad waits until November.)
More of what was announced at the September 1st Music Event:
- New Apple TV is 1/4 the size of the old one, comes with built-in power supply, HDMI, ethernet, Netflix. It’s $99.
- New iTunes 10 includes “Ping,” social network for music. “Follow” your friends to see what they’re listening to, post videos/photos/comments (posted songs are buyable with 1 click), look up concerts near you, etc.
- New iPod Touch is an iPhone 4 without the phone
- iPod Classic: RIP
- Multitouch tiny iPod nano (no more clickwheel)
- iOS 4.1: HDR photos, fix for proximity sensor issues, Game Center support
Epic Citadel and Project Sword
During the GameCenter portion of the Apple presentation, Epic Games took the stage to introduce “Project Sword,” built on their Unreal 3 Engine. You’ll be able to challenge other players to battles in real-time They also released an app called “Epic Citadel” to show off what they will be capable of achieving for the graphically for the iPhone and iPad. The results are pretty impressive.
The iPad Orchestra from Alex Shpil on Vimeo.
Oddly, something that was designed to showcase the potential of the iPad ends up showing off its limitations…The MIDI tones we’re hearing are rather unpleasant, really, and because the iPad screen is not pressure-sensitive, the performers really have very limited control over the tone or quality of the sound they’re producing. If this is the best we can do thus far…it really seems like the iPad is not capable of genuinely functioning as a musical instrument.
