“Planet of the Apps” Segment

- All apps are evaluated based on the following standards:

SKILL REQUIRED: How easy is it to get started making cool drawings?

FEATURES: How full-featured and robust is the app? Is it really just good for line drawings or doodles, or does it have more functionality that allows for creative or original designs?

VALUE: How much app do you get for your money?

“COOL” FACTOR: How well does it show off the iPad’s iPadness?

App #1: ArtStudio

SKILL REQUIRED: Minimal.

FEATURES:

- Variety of brushes and colors
- Basic add-ons like sharpening, embossing, blurring, sepia-toning

DISADVANTAGES:

- Controls can be a bit wonky, and an annoying “info” box tends to pop up and require you to hit “ok” before proceeding, which is annoying.

COST: $0.99

VALUE: Strong value for $1

“COOL” FACTOR: Pretty high.

App #2: Drawing Pad

SKILL REQUIRED: Minimal.

FEATURES:

- Menus and options are very pretty

DISADVANTAGES:

- Options are very limited.

COST: $1.99

VALUE: Reasonable

“COOL” FACTOR: Meh. The design and UI of the app are the most impressive things about it.

App #3: Draw It!

SKILL REQUIRED: None. This app does not reward skill.

FEATURES:

- Offers ability to draw freestyle, on graph paper or lined paper

DISADVANTAGES:

- Instead of instructions, you have to watch a video tutorial. If you play the instructional video, it keeps restarting, even after you resume using the regular app. Only way to get the video to shut up is to close the app.

COST: $1.99

VALUE: Poor

“COOL” FACTOR: There’s a hangman game.

Lon Harris and Jacob Burch should be the only hosts for this show… the other guys don't fit.
