Jason’s ReadWriteWeb Talk on This Week in Startups #169 Bonus

Tuesdays and Fridays at 1pm PT

TWiST #169 Jason Calacanis’ ReadWriteWeb 2WAY Summit Talk
The state of blogs, why publishers should be quirky, Google’s infamous Panda update–nothing was off-topic when RWW Managing Editor Abraham Hyatt sat down with Jason on stage at the RWW 2WAY Summit in NYC. Watch the interviewer become the interviewee on this special TWiST bonus episode.

0:00-2:00 Welcome everyone, our next talk will be from Jason Calacanis with RWW Managing Editor Abraham Hyatt.
2:00-3:00 Why did Nick decide not to show today? Was he scared?
3:00-3:45 Jason recounts his time at Silicon Alley Reporter, when he competed against Nick Denton.
3:45-8:15 Thank you to GoToMeeting for sponsoring the show.
8:15-12:30 Is quirkiness required to be a successful publisher online?
12:30-14:30 Do you think we’re in a post-blogging era, where email is more important?
14:30-17:30 Is part of the power of the blog that anyone can create content?
17:30-18:30 So you’re advocating for fewer voices if those voices aren’t knowledgeable?
18:30-21:00 Jason explains the premise of Klout.
21:00-23:15 How do we move from game-able systems to Web 3.0 that has expert voices?
23:15-25:15 How did the Panda update affect you and Mahalo?
25:15-26:45 How has that shifted the balance of what you prioritize?
26:45-29:45 So you started in the 90s with Silicon Alley Reporter, then Weblogs, Inc. What are some of the fundamental things that have changed between then and now?
29:45-31:15 In this Web 3.0, expert-specific reality, does speed matter as much?
31:15-33:00 But we don’t want to lose speed, right?
33:00-34:30 What about day to day things you don’t need an expert for?
34:30-36:15 So if we’re eliminating those middle voices,
36:15-37:30 What are the risks of this “expert economy”?
37:30-39:30 What technology would you tell current students to learn to start a career in web startups?
39:30-42:45 But some of those metrics are still undefined. How do you know what makes an expert?
42:45-46:00 Thank you to MailChimp for sponsoring the show. Jason demonstrates how to segment a list using the list members’ Klout scores.
46:00-49:00 Who gave you your best startup advice and what was it?
49:00-52:15 So video is how much of what you’re doing now?
52:15-52:30 Is there any risk that those videos could turn into a content farm?
52:30-53:00 So you consider yourself an educator?
53:00-53:15 Jason, thank you for coming on today.

    Martin is a patent troll.

  • 1234

Jason, Great show! good job! Martin Tobias was a great guest. Tyler is a great asset to the show, balance. Here is a thought on I.P; I can think of law as a mechanism, a tool, it’s used by the noble, or the bad actor. Its every kind of people, its life. Grey between black and white, from war to love, its messy. Dig it while we’re in it.

    Awesome show, intelligent and real!

  • Itsthetruth

Martin is a troll by definition…he purchased the I.P., built a website that utilizeses it and is now suing competitors…I might give him a break if he created the I.P. But he did not, period. If anyone follows the industry know that tippr is not the third largest by any measure. Its Martin’s spin. Another thing, nothing in this interview is Intersting…Martin say the samething in every written or verbal interview. You can go to the “about tippr” section of the website and read the exact same self serving B.S. So, tired of hearing him say he’s raised over 500 million dollars. Face it Martin your just a lucky fool. Maybe you should focus your energy on the young employee you recently had a child with. You know the one that you dumped and had to find another job…or maybe your first child you had with that failed marriage.
