TWiST Santiago, Chile Meetup on This Week in Startups #168

Tuesdays and Fridays at 1pm PT

This Week in Startups TWiST Santiago, Chile Meetup #168
Live from South America, it was our first ever TWiST Santiago, Chile meetup with 8 worthy companies competing to take the top three spots and pitch to Jason. Let’s take a look and find out how Zuggi.com, Challengein.com and Gym-Pact.com fared.

00-3:00 Welcome everyone to the first TWiST Santiago, Chile meetup!
00-5:15 With us today is Jose Caballer, host of This Week in Web Design.
15-6:00 Thank you to Hiscox for sponsoring the show. Let’s take a look at the trailer for their web series Leap Year.
00-8:00 Trailer for Leap Year.
00-11:00 Welcome to James Kennedy, the TWiST Chile meetup organizer.
00-11:30 Breaking news: Paris Hilton has joined Google+.
30-12:30 Natalia from safe-search company Zuggi does the first pitch. See the product at Zuggi.com.
30-14:00 Jose rates the Zuggi presentation at an 8 and the idea at an 8.
00-16:00 Jason rates the pitch at a 7 and the idea at an 8. For the pitch, it would be good to give an example.
00-17:00 Next up is Challenge.in. Go to ChallengeIn.com to learn more.
00-18:45 Jason: I think it’s a bad pitch because you were too concerned with selling the brand and not enough with the virtue of the product.
45-20:00 Jose, could you tell what the product was? (Jose gives the pitch a five.)
00-21:15 How much would it cost to re-do this website?
15-21:30 Was that too brutal? Well done Claudio.
30-26:00 Thank you to GoToMeeting for sponsoring the show.
00-28:00 Yifan presents Gym-Pact. Go to gym-pact.com to learn more.
00-30:00 Jose: I think the pitch was clear and I think this is a real problem, getting motivated to go to the gym. I give the pitch a 7 and the idea is a solid 8.
00-31:00 It seems as though you need to unpack this idea a little bit more. Does the money from the people who didn’t go to the gym go to the people who did go to the gym?
00-32:00 Can you explain this more clearly?
00-32:30 What’s the normal rate at which people keep their gym commitments?
30-33:00 Jason: Always go with a real, user scenario. I think the idea is either a 10 or a 2, which I like.
00-33:45 How does this scale? Do you see people doing it with friends?
45-35:00 Are there any regulations around this in terms of considering it gambling?
00-36:15 Yifan walks through the Gym-Pact website.
15-37:15 Is your client really the gym here?
15-37:45 What if the person isn’t motivated by money?
45-39:15 Let’s get the design and the pitch as good as the press you’ve gotten. And you have to get rid of the dash in the name.
15-40:00 Is the financial drive of working out bigger than the social drive?
00-40:30 Jose: I would use this if it was simple, if the design on my iPhone looked great and was super fluid.
30-41:30 Have you experimented doing it one-on-one between friends?
30-42:00 Have you determined who responds to this idea between men and women?
00-42:30 How do you incorporate real, high-stakes gambling?
30-43:00 Well done, let’s hear it for Gym-Pact. That’s all the time we have for today.
00-43:15 How many people came to the meetup tonight, James?
15-43:30 Thank you everyone–Hiscox and GoToMeeting–we’ll see you next time.

My project, AgentPiggy (agentpiggy.com) was one of the 8 finalists! We are an online piggy bank for kids. It’s a beautiful project and endeavor, too bad I couldn’t make the cut this time. Hopefully next time. :)
